I. COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course covers world history to 1500 following guidelines as delegated by the Alabama State Department of Education Course of Study Standards. Emphasis is placed on economics, geography, government, world religions, and how these things shaped the history of Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The textbook used is, Discovering Our Past: A History of the World, Early Ages (Glencoe). The text and classroom instruction are aligned with the Alabama Course of Study for Social Studies. Studies begin with prehistoric man and continue to the year 1500. A pacing guide will be followed so that all objectives are taught. The learning process will be maintained at all times. The Escambia County Code of Student Conductwill be strictly adhered to throughout the school year.
II. REQUIREMENTS FOR CLASS:
1. A notebook or loose leaf paper
2. A PEN, blue or black ink. Pencils, in particular mechanical pencils, are strongly discouraged.
3. It is important that you keep yourself organized. Your success in class will be heavily influenced by your organization.
4. Initiative. You must be prepared for class every day. Success requires a willingness to work. If you do your best and work to your potential, you will succeed in this class.
III. CLASSROOM PROCEDURES: This classroom will abide by the policies set forth by the Alabama Department of Education, the Escambia County Board of Education, and Escambia County Middle School.

In order for effective instruction to occur, there must be a cooperative relationship between student, parent, and educator. Students should:
1. Attend all classes daily and be punctual in attendance.
2. Be prepared to come to class with appropriate working materials.
3. Be respectful to all individuals and property.
4. Refrain from profanity, inflammatory, harassing, or threatening statements.
5. Be clean and neat
6. Be responsible for doing his or her work as assigned.
7. Abide by the rules and regulations of the school.
8. Inform parents or guardians of school accomplishments and needs and promptly take notices from the school to the home.
9. Request to make up assignments within a reasonable length of time after excused absences (5 days).
10. Express viewpoints orally and in writing without being obscene, slanderous, or libelous.
11. Express disagreements without infringing upon the rights of others or interfering with the orderly educational process.
Classroom Rules
1. Enter the classroom quietly.
2. Bring supplies to class.
3. Be in your seat; facing forward, immediately upon entering class.
4. Take subject notebook out and begin bell ringer activity.
5. Refrain from talking during instruction and independent seatwork.
6. Never eat or drink in class.
7. Refrain from all personal grooming in class.
8. Raise your hand when seeking permission to speak or leave your desk.
9. Listen attentively during announcements.
10. Hold all trash until dismissed to your next class.
11. Line up quietly for any classroom dismissal.

1. Maintain regular communication with the school authorities concerning their child’s progress and conduct.
2. Insure that their child is in daily attendance and promptly report or explain an absence or tardiness to the school.
3. Provide their child with the supplies and materials needed to complete class work.
4. Insure that their child has a time, a place, and the materials necessary for doing homework assignments.
5. Assist their child in being healthy, neat and clean.
6. Inform the school by written notice of any problem that could affect the health or behavior of their child.
7. Discuss report cards and work assignments with their child.
8. Maintain up-to-date homework and emergency telephone numbers at the school; including doctor, hospital preferences, and emergency health care form.
9. Assume major responsibility for the student’s behavior.
Provide transportation for their child in the event of suspension from riding the school bus or in the event of after school detention
IV. COURSE GRADING PROCEDURE: It is essential that you know and understand the information covered in this class in order to be successful. You will complete class notes, classroom assignments, homework, quizzes, and tests. There will be comprehensive exams at the end of each quarter and at the end of each semester. The opportunity exists for students to complete an optional project at the end of each quarter for additional credit. Each project must be directly associated with objectives covered in this course, and MUST be the result of individual efforts. Simply printing material or otherwise turning in minimal work will not be accepted. Please see me if you are interested in project work. I will offer assistance where I can. The Escambia County Code of Conduct book will be followed.
1. Tests: One test will be given upon the completion of a chapter, a unit of study, or related objectives. Tests will be composed of various types of questions, to include multiple choice, short answer, fill-in-the-blank, and essay questions. Each test will cover information from notes, the text, and class assignments. (60% of total grade)
2. Notebooks and Other Assignments: All of your notes and the majority of your class work will be done in your notebook. You will need to keep yourself organized. Notebooks will be graded periodically with emphasis on thoroughness, quality, and organization. (40% of total grade)
Grading: The semester is divided into two, nine-week grading periods. Grades for World History will be computed and reported using a standard scale as follows:
100-90 = A 89-80 = B 79-70 = C 69-60 = D 59 and below = F
V. CHEATING AND/OR PLAGIARISM: Students found cheating on any quiz/test, or plagiarizing any work, will receive an automatic grade of zero (0).
VI. ATTENDANCE: The policy with regard to absences as stated in the Code of Conduct book will be followed. In addition, every student should be on time for homeroom each morning, and every student should be in class before the second bell sounds for that class. Students who arrive after the bell has sounded will receive a tardy.
VII. TURNING IN ASSIGNMENTS AND MAKE-UP WORK: It is the STUDENT'S RESPONSIBILITY to keep up with and ensure that all missed work is turned in. Students may ask the teacher what work was missed upon their return. The student will then have 5 days to complete missed work with excused absences.
